Nick Woltemade of VfB Stuttgart is clearly set to move to Premier League side Newcastle United, rather than Bayern Munich. Multiple media outlets reported the news on Thursday evening local time. Now, Lothar Matthäus has shared his views on the upcoming transfer.
“You can only praise Stuttgart’s management—they did everything right in a very difficult and intense transfer window,” the German football icon said in an interview, lauding Stuttgart’s hierarchy. It is reported that the club will earn up to €85 million from selling their attacking star, with an additional €5 million in bonuses expected.
Matthäus continued: “Thanks to Stuttgart maintaining their tough stance for so long, it shows the cohesion within the leadership. Now, you also have the necessary resources to look around (for replacements), and the system may have to undergo some changes. Enzo Gruda or Denis Wepper would be interesting options in attack.”
Matthäus added: “From Woltemade’s perspective, you have to understand the situation and the changes. He can earn more money there, and Bayern Munich wasn’t ready to invest sufficient funds—unlike in the case of Luis Díaz, for example. Woltemade is now in the best league in the world. I can’t imagine Newcastle paying nearly €90 million and then leaving the player on the bench. I believe Woltemade’s physique is perfectly suited for the Premier League.”
