Bruno Fernandes: I Had Two Chances to Leave Man Utd; I Could Have Won More Trophies and Earned a Better Reputation If I Left

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes gave an exclusive interview to Camel Live.

"When I joined the club, besides loving this place and this club, I think my loyalty is reflected in staying with the club during its toughest times. I actually had two chances to leave.

The club said: ‘No, we need you.’

I said: ‘Alright, you have given me something, and I will do something for you.’

Obviously, I don't think my time at the club has lived up to my expectations, because I am eager to win trophies, but the number of trophies I have won is not as many as I should and could have won.

But at the same time, I think everything I have done for the club is still very important in a way, and I don't mean to belittle the contributions of other players.

I think I stuck with the club during our most difficult times, and I hope everyone at the club understands that, because the transfer opportunities I had back then were really good.

So I know very well that I could have taken a different path. I could have taken another route, maybe won more trophies, and people would have judged me differently, because my trophy cabinet would have been filled with silverware. Nowadays, people tend to judge whether you are a better or worse player based on the trophies you win or lose."

In the interview, Fernandes cited Francesco Totti's experience at Roma as inspiration for himself. Totti spent his entire career at the Italian capital club, winning only one Serie A title and some domestic cup honors—an impressive record, but he could have achieved even more if he had moved elsewhere.

"When I talk about winning trophies, the reason I stayed here is because I still believe I can win trophies here.

If the club hadn't told me that our goal is still to reach the highest level we can, to return to the top, to get back to where we belong, I wouldn't have stayed.

If that wasn't my goal, I definitely wouldn't have stayed. But I know the club's goal is still to return to the top, which is also the level I hope the club can reach, and that's exactly why I joined this club in the first place.

So, if I can help the team return to the top, that's the only thing I want to do."
