In the MLS Cup Final, Vancouver Whitecaps face Inter Miami. Ahead of the match, Whitecaps forward Thomas Müller stated that this will be a perfect final, emphasizing that the two teams’ playing styles will make the showdown extremely exciting.
On the MLS Cup Final
Müller said: “I think this game is fantastic. I know you, the media, and MLS want to focus on Messi, me, and other big-name players – that’s understandable. But I believe the game truly belongs to two teams with very attractive and entertaining playing styles. This is a perfect final in my eyes. I’m honored to be part of it.”
Müller will reunite with several former rivals on the field: Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez. He faced these Inter Miami stars multiple times during his time at Bayern Munich and the German national team.
Müller said: “It’s always nice to meet old friends again. We’re not particularly close, but I’ve always watched them play – they’re all great players, past and some still present. Being able to look back on part of my career and meet them again is wonderful. As for the result or the games that happened in the past, they don’t mean much for the future, but it’s really good to see them again.”
However, Müller stated that past records will not affect his confidence in the MLS Final, as those victories are already in the past.
Müller said: “When I look back on the past, I feel comfortable because it’s already written in history. I experienced many great moments with the team in those games – it was fun. But these mean nothing for Saturday’s match.”
“This is a new game. What happened before may give you confidence and make you feel like you can compete with any opponent, but I don’t rely on history for confidence. Just like the team has beaten Inter Miami twice this season, but what does that mean? It just brings a bit of a good feeling, but ultimately the game has to be decided on the field. Saturday belongs to the future – it’s a good topic of conversation, and I hope we can keep talking about it after the game on Saturday.”
Müller and Germany defeated Argentina 4-0 in the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals and won the 2014 World Cup Final 1-0 against Argentina. Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano was one of the Argentine players who suffered those two defeats at the time.
When talking about Müller, Mascherano joked: “I don’t have many good memories of him. I played against him for years at both national team and club level. He’s undoubtedly one of the best players of his generation – a World Cup winner who has won everything at Bayern. His arrival has brought a different level of prestige not only to Vancouver but also to the entire MLS. Truly a great player. I hope luck is on our side tomorrow.”
