1988: Netherlands Win Their First European Championship

On this day in 1988, the Netherlands national team achieved a historic feat by winning their first-ever European Championship. In the final held at the Olympiastadion in Munich, West Germany, the Dutch faced the Soviet Union. The Soviets had defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in the group stage, but the Dutch had their revenge in the final. Goals from Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten secured a 2-0 victory for the Netherlands. Van Basten's goal, a spectacular volley from a tight angle, is widely regarded as one of the greatest goals in football history. This victory was a culmination of the "Total Football" philosophy that the Netherlands had been playing, and it remains one of the most memorable moments in Dutch football history.

2014: Italy Eliminated from the World Cup

In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Italy faced Uruguay in a crucial Group D match on June 25. The match was a must-win for Italy to progress to the knockout stage. However, Uruguay's Diego Godín scored the only goal of the game in the 81st minute, sending Italy crashing out of the tournament. This defeat was a major disappointment for the Italian team, which had high hopes of defending its World Cup title. The loss also led to the resignation of Italy's head coach, Cesare Prandelli, and the president of the Italian Football Federation, Carlo Tavecchio.
