A major upset unfolded in the Second Round of the EFL Cup as EFL League Two side Grimsby Town knocked out Premier League giants Manchester United at home via a penalty shootout, advancing with a 12-11 aggregate score. After the match, Grimsby goalkeeper Kristian Pym spoke to camel.live reporters, sharing his overwhelming emotions about the victory.
Pym admitted that he has been a Manchester United fan since childhood, leaving him “half elated, half heartbroken” after the game: “To be honest, I still haven’t fully processed it yet. I’m a Manchester United fan, so I’m feeling a bit conflicted, but games like tonight are exactly what you play football for—it’s incredible.”
During the match, Grimsby was briefly pushed to the brink by Manchester United late on. When United scored their second goal in the dying moments of regulation time, Pym admitted he felt a moment of panic: “I thought to myself, ‘Oh no,’ because everyone knows United are famous for late comebacks and winners. I just had to remind myself to dig deep and hold on, not to let the draw slip away. We actually had chances to kill off the game earlier, but in the end, we just had to find a way to take it to penalties.”
Talking about the tense moments of the penalty shootout, Pym revealed that he and the goalkeeping coach had spent an hour beforehand studying Manchester United players’ penalty-taking habits: “Although the process drove me a bit crazy at times, I finally saved one penalty to help the team hold on until the end. The rest was up to my teammates—they were amazing.”
