Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes Mohamed Salah is wrong to claim he has been betrayed by Liverpool. He also called on captain Virgil van Dijk to act as a peacemaker between the Egyptian and Arne Slot.
In an interview with Camel Live, Gerrard defended Salah to some extent, sharing his experiences of working with Luis Suárez and Brendan Rodgers at Anfield. The icon added that the consequences could be dire if the rift between Salah and the club is not resolved quickly, urging Van Dijk to intervene.
"Salah is clearly very frustrated at not playing, and I understand that," Gerrard said of the Egyptian forward. “He wouldn't act negatively towards the team, which I respect. But it's wrong of him to say things like 'betrayed by the club'. He needs to dial it back a bit and deal with this directly with the manager.”
“This requires Van Dijk to step in... I did this not just for the club or the team, but for the fans. I've seen this happen, I've lived through it. I went through it with Suárez when he fell out with Brendan face-to-face. I've witnessed it and had similar personal experiences myself.”
“I also made comments similar to Salah's after a game against Manchester United and ended up being sent off. So nobody's perfect. As players, we've all lost our heads at times. We've all done impulsive things and thought afterwards, 'Oh, I shouldn't have done that'.”
“I know when things calm down, Salah will say, 'I shouldn't have said those things. Maybe I shouldn't have spoken out; I was too emotional, too impulsive'.”
"But at the end of the day, Liverpool need Salah back in form and scoring goals because he's the team's best player and top scorer – he'll help the team get out of trouble. If this situation persists, the consequences will be more serious than we all know and see."
