According to reports, Enzo Maresca rested Wesley Fofana for Chelsea’s midweek fixture, and the player is uninjured and will rejoin the team.
Fofana did not feature for Chelsea in their midweek match against Leeds United, sparking concerns among some fans that the center-back had suffered another injury. However, sources close to the club have clarified that this is not the case – Fofana’s absence was a result of Maresca’s efforts to manage his playing time.
Fofana joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 for £75 million but has been plagued by injuries during his time at the club. Maresca is working to help him regain his best form as soon as possible to cope with the upcoming busy fixture schedule. The French defender has delivered impressive performances in recent games, including last week’s victory over Barcelona and the weekend’s draw with Arsenal.
Fofana played the full 90 minutes in both matches, prompting Maresca to give him a rest against Leeds United. He is expected to be included in the squad for Chelsea’s trip to face Bournemouth this weekend.
Maresca is making every effort to manage the playing time of both Fofana and Reece James, as both players have been hampered by muscle injuries in recent seasons. Romeo Lavia is also sidelined with injury, with the midfielder currently out due to a quadriceps issue.
