Match Preview
The 2025â26 Premier League campaignâs Matchweek Two wraps up on Monday evening with a highly anticipated showdown between Newcastle United and Liverpool.
Yet much of the talk around this clash will center on a player who wonât feature in Tyneside. Aleksander Isakâs relationship with the Magpies has broken down due to Liverpoolâs interest in signing him, and the Swedish striker recently claimed his club had gone back on promises made to him this summer.
To date, Newcastle have pushed back against Liverpoolâs pursuit of their star frontman and still insist on a club-record transfer fee to let Isak leave.
Both sides would have been fairly satisfied with their opening matches last week: the defending champions (Liverpool) saw off a scare against Bournemouth to secure a 4â2 victory, while Newcastleâdespite all the off-field drama surrounding Isakâpicked up a point away to Aston Villa. Itâs worth noting, though, that they faced 10 men for the final 30 minutes of that game.
This fixture has served up some of the Premier Leagueâs all-time classic matches, and a thrilling early-season contest is expected when the two sides meet under the Monday night lights.

Newcastle United Team News
Over the past week, Alexander Isakâs relationship with Newcastle United has taken a further turn for the worse â yet Liverpool still havenât struck a deal with the Magpies to sign the striker.
As a result, the Swedish forward remains contracted to Newcastle, but he will not be brought back into the first-team fold until the summer transfer window closes. In Isakâs absence, Eddie Howe is likely to turn to Anthony Gordon in a flexible attacking role, and Gordon will line up alongside Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes in Newcastleâs frontline.
Given there are no new injury worries for the Magpies, there would be little surprise if Howe sticks with the same starting lineup that earned a stalemate at Villa Park last week. On the injury front, Joe Willock is edging closer to a return to action, while Jacob Ramsey is expected to make his first appearance for the club as a substitute.

Liverpool Team News
Towards the end of the week, Slot confirmed that summer signing Jeremie Frimpong will remain sidelined until the September international break, having suffered a hamstring injury. Compounding matters, Liverpool are dealing with a right-back shortage as Conor Bradley is also injured.
The Northern Irish defender has resumed training following a muscle injury sustained during preseason, but even with Frimpong ruled out, he is not expected to feature in Mondayâs match. To cover this gap, Slot could opt to deploy Joe Gomez â or, more intriguingly, Dominik Szoboszlai â in the right-back role.
Hugo EkitikÊ is a shoo-in for the forward position after turning in an impressive Premier League bow. The Frenchman will line up alongside Liverpoolâs club-record signing Florian Wirtz, as well as Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, in the attacking unit.
Importantly, Ryan Gravenberch has returned to the squad after serving his suspension.
