Kevin Mac Allister is a pleasant surprise brought by Lionel Scaloni to the Argentina national team, with the late call-up officially announced on Sunday. After a Belgian Pro League match, Mac Allister shared the news with his teammates in the dressing room.
Following Union Saint-Gilloise’s 1-1 away draw against K.V. Mechelen, Kevin Mac Allister announced his first call-up to the Argentina national team and thanked his teammates for their support in helping him realize this dream.
Mac Allister said: “I just want to thank everyone, because two hours before today’s game started, I received a call: I’m flying to Alicante to join the Argentina national team. This is my first time playing for the national team, and I know I’m here not only because of my own efforts but also thanks to everyone in this dressing room. So I want to take this opportunity to thank you all.”
Applause erupted as soon as he finished speaking.
Mac Allister added: “I’m extremely happy, and my family is too. When I called my wife, she was in tears, so this feeling is really wonderful. On one hand, I’m overjoyed because tomorrow I’ll fulfill a dream; on the other hand, I’m upset because we couldn’t win today’s game.”
Though little-known before, Kevin Mac Allister has made a name for himself in European football over the past few seasons. During his time with the Belgian club, his excellent defensive abilities helped the team win three league titles. His defensive versatility can provide Argentina with multiple tactical options.
